Sound Healing for Stress: What the Research Says, and a Program in Fort Kochi That Puts It Into Practice

Here is a scene most of us know.

You are lying in bed at the end of a full day. The room is quiet. Nothing is wrong, exactly. But the mind will not stop. It replays a conversation. It rewrites a message you already sent. It scans tomorrow's list. The body is still, but nothing inside feels still.

You are not sick. But you are not resting either.

This is the kind of stress that does not announce itself. It sits underneath the surface, in your shoulders, in your jaw, in the shallow breath you do not notice until someone points it out. And because it is not dramatic, it stays. Weeks become months. Months become years. Somewhere along the way it starts to feel normal, and that is exactly the problem.

What happens when you cannot switch off

Stress in small doses is useful. It gets you across the road. It helps you finish the presentation. But when it becomes the default setting, the body pays a price. Sleep gets thinner. Focus gets harder. Small irritations feel larger than they should. You may not connect any of this to stress because it creeps in gradually.

A growing body of research is looking at what helps the body return to a calmer baseline, and one of the areas gaining serious attention is sound.

What research is finding about sound and stress

A widely referenced study from the University of California, San Diego, published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, examined the effects of Tibetan singing bowl meditation on mood and tension. Sixty-two participants took part. After a single session using singing bowls, gongs, and other instruments, they reported significantly lower levels of tension, anger, fatigue, and low mood. The reductions were strong across the group. And here is the part that stood out: participants who had never experienced a sound bath before showed a greater drop in tension than those who had done it many times. No experience was required. No learning curve. You just lie down and receive.

A 2025 scoping review published in JMIR Mental Health examined 34 studies on sound-based approaches for stress. The conclusion: sound-based approaches offer promising, non-invasive methods for stress reduction, with consistent evidence that they lower cortisol, stabilise heart rate, and reduce self-reported anxiety. The review also noted that personalised, in-person experiences tended to produce more consistent results than recorded audio alone.

This is not a fringe idea wrapped in incense. It is a growing evidence base. And it points to something simple: being surrounded by certain sounds and vibrations, in a safe space, can help the nervous system do something it often cannot do on its own. Slow down.

A program that works with this, week by week

Knowing that a single session can shift your state is interesting. But a single session is also a single session. The question worth asking is: what happens when you do this consistently, over time, and combine it with a daily practice between sessions?

That is the thinking behind a five-week sound healing program now live on Lifed, hosted at a dedicated studio in Fort Kochi.

The program is structured simply. One personal sound bath session per week, for five weeks. Each session is sixty minutes and begins with a brief consultation so the experience is shaped to how you are feeling that day. No two sessions are exactly alike. You choose between a traditional sound bath or a zero-gravity format. The instruments include Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, chimes, tuning forks, and drums, played around you while you lie down and rest.

Between sessions, you receive a guided meditation recording to practise for about fifteen minutes a day. This part matters. It is the bridge between what happens in the room and how you respond to stress in everyday life.

The intention across five weeks is not to give you five relaxing hours and send you home. It is to help you develop a different relationship with stress. Less reactive. More aware. Not fixed forever, but shifted in a direction that feels more like yours.

Who is this for

This is not a residential retreat. It is a day program. You stay in your life, go to work, come home, and once a week you walk into a calm room in Fort Kochi and let everything slow down for an hour.

It suits people who carry stress quietly. People who sleep okay but never feel rested. People who have tried breathing apps and meditation courses and thought "that was nice" but never went back. People who want something in-person, guided, and sustained over weeks rather than compressed into a weekend.

It is also private. One participant per session. No group dynamics to manage. Just you, the practitioner, and the instruments.

The practitioner

The program is hosted by Jerry Varghese, a certified meditation and mindfulness coach and sound healer. Jerry is the founder of Nihshreyasa Holistic Wellness Studio in Fort Kochi. His approach is calm, personalised, and unhurried. He holds a CMT-P certification from IMTA, along with certifications in sound healing and meditation teaching.

On Lifed, Jerry and Nihshreyasa are a verified Healthmate, meaning the studio, the program structure, and the practitioner credentials have been reviewed before the listing went live.

Why this format matters

Most sound healing available today is either a one-off group session at a studio, or a recording you play through earphones. Both have a place. But neither builds the kind of sustained, personal, week-on-week rhythm that the research points to as most effective.

This program sits in between. It is structured enough to create real momentum. It is personal enough to respond to where you are, not where the calendar says you should be. And it takes place in a real space, with a real person, not on a screen.

On Lifed, this is what curated means. Not a listing. A program shaped with the host, reviewed before it goes live, and designed to be worth the time of someone who takes their wellbeing seriously but does not want to be sold a miracle.
