It Is Not About the Calories: What Research Reveals About Yoga and Healthy Weight, Plus a 1-Month Yoga Program in Fort Kochi

It Is Not About the Calories: What Research Reveals About Yoga and Healthy Weight, Plus a 1-Month Yoga Program in Fort Kochi

You already know this feeling

You have downloaded the app. You have bought the shoes. You have promised yourself, "From Monday, seriously."

And then Monday meets a deadline, Tuesday meets traffic, and by Thursday the plan is quietly gone. Your weight goes up a little every year, and so does the guilt.

If that sounds like you, you are not lazy. You have just been told the wrong story. Two researchers, working thousands of kilometres apart, found a better one.

Clue one: a scientist in Seattle who noticed something odd

In the early 2000s, a public health researcher named Alan Kristal was studying the lifestyles of thousands of adults in Washington State, USA.

His team looked at 15,500 healthy men and women aged 45 to 55, and at how their weight changed over ten years. Some of them had done yoga for at least 30 minutes a week for four years or more.

The results, published in 2005, surprised many people. Overweight participants who did yoga regularly lost about 5 pounds over those ten years. Overweight people who did not do yoga gained about 14 pounds.

Here is the interesting part. Kristal did not think it was about calories burned. A gentle yoga class simply does not burn that many. His explanation was body awareness: "Yoga makes you more aware of your body. So when you've eaten enough food, you're sensitive to the feeling of being full."

One honest note: this was an observational study. It shows a strong link, not proof that yoga alone caused the difference. But the idea behind it is powerful. Healthy weight may have less to do with punishing workouts and more to do with learning to listen to your body.

Clue two: a psychologist in London who timed our habits

A few years later, at University College London, a health psychologist named Phillippa Lally asked a simple question: how long does it actually take to build a habit?

She followed 96 people as they each tried to build one new daily habit, like eating fruit with lunch or going for a short run. The study, published in 2009, found that it took an average of 66 days for a new behaviour to feel automatic. For some people it took 18 days. For others it took 254.

And one more finding that should make you smile: missing a single day did not ruin the habit.

So the goal of your first month is not a perfect body. It is a strong start. Once the practice has a place in your week, the rest can follow.

Why this matters for us in India

This is not just a Western story. According to the Global Burden of Disease study published in The Lancet in 2025, India had about 180 million adults living with overweight or obesity in 2021. If current trends continue, that number could cross 440 million by 2050.

Most of us do not need another crash diet. We need a routine we actually enjoy, a teacher who notices us, and a group that expects to see us on Tuesday.

Clue three: a rooftop in Fort Kochi

That brings us to a breezy rooftop in Fort Kochi, with plants in the corners, open air, and a small group of mats laid out side by side. This is where the research becomes something you can actually do, one class at a time.

Inside the 1-Month Yoga Program in Fort Kochi

The 1-Month Yoga Program in Fort Kochi for Healthy Weight Management and Strength is a beginner-friendly program on Lifed, hosted by Bhumi Yoga & Wellness, a Lifed verified Healthmate based in Kochi.

Over four weeks you attend 12 in-person classes, three every week, in a small group of up to 15 people. Each week builds on the last, so your body gets stronger without being thrown in at the deep end.

Your teacher

The program is led by Sona MS, founder of Bhumi Yoga & Wellness and a Yoga Alliance certified teacher. She has more than three years of experience teaching students from around the world and has guided over 1,000 students. Her classes focus on mindful movement, proper alignment, strength and flexibility, across Ashtanga, Hatha, Power and Vinyasa yoga.

How the month unfolds

  1. Week 1, Hatha Yoga foundations and alignment. You learn to stand, breathe and hold postures the right way. This is the week you start to notice your body again.
  2. Week 2, Power Yoga and core activation. The pace picks up. You build heat, core strength and stamina.
  3. Week 3, Adapted Ashtanga and dynamic Vinyasa. You link breath and movement into flowing sequences, adapted so beginners can keep up.
  4. Week 4, Integration of movement styles. Everything comes together, so you leave with a practice you understand and can continue.

Along the way you also practise pranayama (breathwork), core strengthening and flexibility work, with progress check-ins and take-home movement guidance so the habit continues after Week 4.
