Can You Get Up From the Floor Without Your Hands? Inside Lifed's 5-Day Kalaripayattu Program in Thrissur

Can You Get Up From the Floor Without Your Hands? Inside Lifed's 5-Day Kalaripayattu Program in Thrissur

The Sunday afternoon that started it

Diya S, is 38. She lives in Bengaluru, works long days on a laptop, and walks when she can. Diya is not one person. She is many of us.

One Sunday, her niece pulls her down to the floor to play. Sitting down is easy. Getting up is not. One hand goes to the sofa, the other presses on her knee, and a small "ooof" comes out before she can stop it. Everyone laughs. Diya laughs too. But later that night, the moment stays with her.

She is not unwell. She is not "old". So why did something so simple feel so hard?

What researchers learned from a simple floor test

Brazilian researchers have spent years studying exactly that moment. They call it the sitting-rising test. You sit down on the floor and stand back up, ideally without using your hands, knees or anything else for support. You start with 10 points and lose a point each time you need help.

In a study published in 2025 in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, they followed 4,282 adults aged 46 to 75 for a median of about 12 years. People with the lowest scores had 3.84 times the risk of dying from natural causes compared with people who scored highest, even after other factors were accounted for. The researchers noted that this one movement quietly checks strength, flexibility, balance and body composition, all in about two minutes.

The point is not fear. The point is this: getting down to the floor and rising with ease is a skill. And skills can be practised.

Why this matters so much in India right now

Most of us simply do not move enough. A large study in The Lancet Global Health found that almost half of adults in India were not getting enough physical activity in 2022: about 57% of women and 42% of men. If nothing changes, that could rise to 60% by 2030. Globally, the WHO puts the number at 31% of adults, or about 1.8 billion people.

Chairs, cars, screens and sofas have taken the floor out of our daily lives. The body forgets what it does not use.

Kerala already had an answer

Long before "mobility" became a fitness word, Kerala had Kalaripayattu. It is a movement tradition built on the very things Diya found hard: getting low, staying steady, turning in every direction, and rising with control.

Research on Kalaripayattu is still small, but it points the same way. In a 2018 study of 20 college men in Aluva, eight weeks of Kalaripayattu training (1.5 hours per session) led to significant changes in balance, agility, endurance and explosive strength. It is one small study, not the final word. It does match what Kalari practitioners have seen in their students for a long time.

So Diya did something about it. She booked five days in Thrissur.

Inside the 5-Day Kalaripayattu Program in Thrissur

The 5-Day Kalaripayattu Program in Thrissur for Balance & Movement Confidence is a beginner program on Lifed, hosted by Kalari Realm, a Lifed verified Healthmate. Sessions happen in a garden kalari in Thrissur, the kind of setting where this tradition belongs.

You learn from Amal Babu, a Kalaripayattu trainer and Kalari bodywork practitioner who founded Kalari Realm and brings 12 years of experience. His co-founder, Stefy Paulson, is a nutritionist.

This is not a fight class. There is no sparring and no combat training. It is Kalaripayattu as a way to move better, taught one layer at a time.
