10 Best Wellness Retreats in Kerala for 2026/2027, and How to Choose the Right One

10 Best Wellness Retreats in Kerala for 2026/2027, and How to Choose the Right One

The short answer: Ten of Kerala's most trusted wellness retreats for 2026/2027 are Kalari Kovilakom and Kairali in Palakkad, Somatheeram and Niraamaya Surya Samudra near Kovalam, Carnoustie in Mararikulam, The Nattika Beach and Sitaram Beach Retreat in Thrissur, Kumarakom Lake Resort on Vembanad Lake, the Sivananda Ashram at Neyyar Dam, and Spice Village in Thekkady. The best one for you depends less on rankings and more on what you want the days for: deep rest, a long Ayurveda stay, yoga, or time in nature.

This list isn't ranked. Each place is here because it does one thing especially well. We've said what that is, who it suits, and what to check before you book.

Why Kerala for a wellness retreat?

Kerala has something that can't be copied elsewhere: a living Ayurveda tradition, practised by families and centres for generations, set in a landscape that slows you down on its own. Rain on tiled roofs. Backwaters at first light. Forest air in the hills.

It also has a public quality system. The Kerala Department of Tourism classifies Ayurveda centres into three tiers: Ayur Silver, Ayur Gold and Ayur Diamond, with Diamond having the highest facilities. It's a useful first filter when you compare places.

The 10 retreats

1. Kalari Kovilakom, Palakkad: best for going all in

Kalari Kovilakom sits in a 200-year-old palace in Kollengode, in the old Vengunad kingdom, and was once a place of Ayurvedic care for the Vengunad kings. Today it has 19 heritage rooms, and each guest's program is personalised by the Ayurveda team, with a sattvic diet to match.

It suits you if: you want to commit fully, with a structured daily rhythm and very few distractions. Good to know: it is run by CGH Earth as an NABH-accredited Ayurveda hospital, so expect a program shaped by a doctor's consultation, not a spa menu. Check minimum stay lengths directly. Official site: cghearth.com/kalari-kovilakom

2. Kairali, The Ayurvedic Healing Village, Palakkad: best for choice and space

Kairali spreads across a 65-acre village of greenery and coconut trees in Palakkad, with four types of villa and a long list of Ayurveda, yoga and meditation programs. The retreat states it is NABH and Ayur Diamond certified.

It suits you if: you want room to walk, a wide choice of programs, and a place that has done this for decades. Good to know: with so many programs on offer, decide what you want the time for before you speak to them. It makes the choice much simpler. Official site: ayurvedichealingvillage.com

3. Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort, Chowara: best for a classic beach Ayurveda stay

On a hillock above Chowara Beach, about 9 km south of Kovalam, Somatheeram has run for more than 30 years across 15-plus acres. Traditional wooden bungalows with carved doors and pillars look out towards the sea, and yoga is part of every stay.

It suits you if: you picture Ayurveda in Kerala as sea air, oil, morning yoga and a slow walk on the beach. Good to know: it's close to Thiruvananthapuram, which makes it one of the easier retreats to reach for international guests. 4. Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra, Kovalam: best for slow, private time by the sea

Perched on a cliff edge near Kovalam, Surya Samudra is built around traditional Kerala wooden homes with terracotta roofs and carved pillars. Yoga happens on the beach, on the cliffs or in open pavilions, and there are ten dedicated Ayurveda rooms.

It suits you if: you want rest to feel unhurried and a little indulgent, and you're travelling as a couple. Good to know:this is a resort first, with Ayurveda and yoga woven in. If you want a strict daily routine, look at options 1, 2 or 6. Official site: niraamaya.com

5. Carnoustie Ayurveda & Wellness Resort, Mararikulam: best for privacy

On the Arabian Sea shore at Mararikulam in Alappuzha, Carnoustie is known for pool villas and programs across Ayurveda and wellbeing. The resort states it holds the Ayur Diamond 2026 classification from Kerala's Department of Tourism.

It suits you if: privacy matters most, and you want space to rest without shared spaces at every turn. Good to know:Mararikulam is a quieter stretch of coast, and the Alappuzha backwaters are close by for a slow day out. Official site: carnoustieresorts.com

6. The Nattika Beach Ayurveda Resort, Thrissur: best for a longer, screen-light stay

Nattika Beach sits in the Thrissur district of central Kerala, about 60 km (90 minutes by road) from Cochin International Airport. It asks for a minimum of 7 days for its rejuvenation program and 14 days for Panchakarma, and most guests stay about two weeks. Phones go in stands at mealtimes, and Wi-Fi access is agreed with the doctor at your first consultation.

It suits you if: you want a real pause from screens and have the time for a longer stay. Good to know: 1 June to 30 September is its off season, with lower rates. Official site: thenattikabeach.com

7. Sitaram Beach Retreat, Thrissur: best for tradition-led Ayurveda

Near Snehatheeram Beach in Thalikulam, Sitaram draws on a family legacy in Ayurveda that it describes as 100 years old. Alongside its Ayurveda programs it offers yoga, meditation and pranayama, and guidance on food. It is NABH accredited, and it also runs a mountain retreat in Munnar.

It suits you if: lineage matters to you, and you like the idea of a family-run tradition rather than a hotel brand. Good to know: the retreat publishes guidance on choosing how many days to stay. Read it before you book. Official site: sitaramretreat.com

8. Kumarakom Lake Resort, Ayurmana: best for backwaters and a gentle start

On the banks of Vembanad Lake, about 72 km from Cochin International Airport, Kumarakom Lake Resort's Ayurmana centre is housed in a 200-year-old nalukettu. It was once home to the Chathamangalathu Mana, a family of Ayurvedic practitioners, and was moved and rebuilt here.

It suits you if: it's your first time, you're travelling with someone who wants a holiday as much as a retreat, and you'd love mornings on the water. Good to know: the resort runs shorter introductory Ayurveda packages as well as longer ones. [VERIFY: current package lengths] Official site: kumarakomlakeresort.in

9. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram, Neyyar Dam: best for yoga and a simple rhythm

This is an ashram, not a resort. Days usually include morning and evening meditation or satsang, two yoga classes, talks or chanting, karma yoga (helping around the ashram) and vegetarian meals. Beginners and experienced practitioners are both welcome.

It suits you if: you want structure, community and a simple life for a while, and you don't need comfort to rest. Good to know: timings, arrival days and fees change, so read the current program rules before you travel. Official site: sivananda.org.in/neyyardam

10. Spice Village, Thekkady: best for nature and forest time

In the hills near the Periyar River and wildlife sanctuary, Spice Village has 52 cottages with roofs thatched in elephant grass, using a technique practised by the Mannan community. Around 75% of its power comes from solar on site. Days can include forest treks with park rangers, plantation walks and bird watching, and CGH Earth offers an Ayurveda package here.

It suits you if: what you need most is green, quiet and your feet on a forest trail. Good to know: this is a nature stay with Ayurveda available, not an Ayurveda-first retreat. Official site: cghearth.com/spice-village

How do I choose the right wellness retreat in Kerala?

Start with the reason, not the resort. Ask yourself one question: what do I want these days to be for?

Then check four things before you book:

  1. Time. Some programs need a minimum of 7 or 14 days. Be honest about the time you really have.
  2. Classification. Ask whether the centre is classified Ayur Silver, Gold or Diamond by Kerala Tourism.
  3. The daily rhythm. Ask for a sample day. Wake-up time, meals, sessions, screen rules.
  4. What's included. Stay, meals, consultations, yoga and transfers vary widely.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a wellness retreat in Kerala?

October to May is peak season, with drier weather and more travellers. June to September is monsoon and usually off season, with lower rates at many retreats. The monsoon is also the traditional season for Ayurveda in Kerala, and many centres run monsoon programs.

How long should a wellness retreat in Kerala be?

It depends on the program. Short introductory stays of two to four days exist, but longer Ayurveda programs often need more. At The Nattika Beach, for example, rejuvenation programs start at 7 days and Panchakarma at 14. If you have only a weekend or a few days, look for a program designed for that length rather than cutting a long one short.

Are Kerala wellness retreats medical treatment?

Some are and some aren't. Several well-known centres are accredited Ayurveda hospitals that run clinical programs after a doctor's consultation. Others are resorts or ashrams focused on rest, yoga and time in nature. If you have a health condition or take regular medication, speak to your own doctor before you book any retreat.

What does Ayur Diamond mean?

Ayur Diamond is the highest of three tiers (Ayur Silver, Ayur Gold, Ayur Diamond) in the Kerala Department of Tourism's classification of Ayurveda centres. Ayur Diamond means the centre meets the highest facility standard in that scheme.

Can I do a wellness retreat in Kerala if I've never done yoga or Ayurveda?

Yes. Most retreats welcome beginners, and the Sivananda Ashram at Neyyar Dam welcomes all levels. Ask for a sample day before you book so you know what to expect.

Is there a short wellness retreat in Kerala for a weekend?

Yes. Some curated programs on Lifed are built for short stays, such as the 2-Day Ayurvedic Eye and Stress Reset in Kollam. Each one shows its format, what's included and the Healthmate who hosts it before you book.
